EDEL QUINN’S ANNIVERSARY MASS

Edel Quinn
A Tireless Young Apostle
Early Life and Calling
Edel Mary Quinn was born on September 14, 1907, in Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland. She grew up in a devout Catholic family and showed a deep love for prayer from an early age. As a teenager, Edel felt a calling to
religious life and wished to join the Poor Clares convent. However, her plans changed when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Due to her fragile health, she was unable to enter the
convent. Despite this setback, Edel never gave up on her desire to serve God.
Joining the Legion of Mary
At the age of 20, Edel joined the Legion of Mary in Dublin. She quickly became involved in various apostolic works, including visiting
hospitals, prisons, and families in need. Her
remarkable dedication, despite her illness, caught the attention of Frank Duff, the founder of the Legion of Mary. He saw in Edel a
passionate and self-sacrificing leader.
Mission to East Africa
In 1936, Edel was appointed as a Legion Envoy to East Africa, tasked with establishing the Legion of Mary in the region. Given her frail health, this mission was an immense
challenge. However, with unwavering faith and a deep love for Our Lady, Edel tirelessly
founded praesidia and curiae across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, and Mauritius.
Her mission was filled with hardships, including illness, harsh climates, and limited resources. Yet, through her extraordinary zeal and trust in God, Edel successfully spread the Legion of Mary, collaborating with priests and laypeople to strengthen Catholic communities.
Final Days and Legacy
Edel’s tuberculosis worsened due to her relentless efforts and constant travels. On May 12, 1944, she passed away in Nairobi, Kenya, at the young age of 36. Though her life was brief, her impact on the Legion of Mary was profound. She is remembered as a woman of great love,
humility, and self-sacrifice for the apostolate of Our Lady.
On December 15, 1994, Pope John Paul II declared Edel Quinn Venerable, recognizing her holy life as a step towards beatification.
An Inspiration for Legionaries
Edel Quinn is a powerful example of how a young person can dedicate their entire life to God through service in the Legion of Mary. Despite physical limitations, she remained passionate and committed to her mission with love and unwavering faith.
As legionaries, we can learn from her example by trusting in God and Our Lady in all our
apostolic works. May Edel Quinn continue to inspire us to serve with dedication and love.
