"Other sheep I have that are not of this fold; them also I must bring and there shall be one fold under one shepherd" (John 10:16).
People outside the Church "toss on a sea of doubt from which their hearts crave rest" (Legion Of Mary Handbook with ref. Acts 8:30-31). Someone has to persuade them that within the Church there is faith and calm. There are souls ready now.
"The harvest is great but the labourers are few"(Mt 9:37}.
The Legion engages in door to door visitation, crowd contact, running book barrows. The parish runs RCIA but the course might be half over when you make your contact; many are not ready to begin instruction straight away. It is not wise to launch into a heated debate with a parish contact. Some don’t want to talk to a Priest. The Catholic Enquiry Centre conducts a postal Course for enquirers and has a web site.
The system of the Legion of Mary enkindles an apostolic fire in its members, an apostolic soul which is always ready to be switched on - no place or time is ruled out. Those with the
Legion spirit are often doing apostolate without being conscious of it; without realising it, playing a part in the overcoming of sin, indifference. This can go on everywhere - in each house, each shop, each office or other place where a devoted legionary is.
The Legion is so effective because it consists of an arrangement of elements of the Church's heritage that have the power to carry out certain vital needs in the world.
